Waxing: The Answers You Need

Waxing is great hair removal method if you don’t want to spend to much, don’t mind repeated it every few weeks, and like to do your own hair removal in the privacy of your home.

Understanding a little about the background to waxing can help you if you use this method of hair removal. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions:

What’s the method behind waxing?

A waxing preparation is spread over the skin, the thinner the better, using a spatula or other application tool. A strip of cloth is pressed on top and then pulled back sharply taking the hair out of the follicles.

What’s the difference between hot waxes and cold waxes?

Good hot waxes melt just above body temperature so they can be easily spread thinly over the skin. As they harden they trap the hair in the wax so it is removed by the roots when the wax is ripped off.

On the other hand, a cold wax comes in a pre-coated strip which is simply pressed firmly onto the area to be treated. The same idea applies, the hair sticks to the strip and comes out of the follicle when the strip is ripped off.

How is the skin affected by waxing?

As dead skin cells are removed in this process the skin can feel quite smooth afterwards. The hair waxing action does cause the skin to sting and many find a soothing skin healing cream to be helpful afterwards. Some persons find the skin reacts with redness and bumps which disappear after a few hours.

Are there any health considerations?

Only if you have skin problems. Some users of medications like Accutane or Retin-A report weakened skin so it’s best to avoid waxing as the skin may tear – very painful!

The only other considerations are pretty obvious really. If skin is broken, or you have warts, or moles or pimples in a certain area, then avoid waxing. Also skin that is sunburned can be very sensitive so don’t wax if you are just getting over sunburn.

On what body areas wax be used?

Just about any area depending on your pain toleration level. Very sensitive areas like the nipples for example should not be waxed. If you have stray hair there it’s best to use a tweezer and pluck them individually.

How long before hair reappears?

For many people about three to eight weeks. Everyone is different but often people find the hair is weaker when it regrows making it a bit easier to take out.

How can the pain or discomfort be minimized?

A simple way to greatly minimize the discomfort is to press hard on the skin right after the waxing strip is pulled off. To emphasize again, do this IMMEDIATELY after the strip is pulled off. Press down hard with the cushion of the finger or the palm of the hand on larger areas.

Some recommend going over the area with an ice cube. This can soothe the skin and avoid swelling.

So perhaps waxing is for you. Some can do it at home, others prefer to go to a beauty salon and have it done by professions. Whichever way, the feel of freshly waxed skin is, well, just great!
