Failed Back Surgery Syndrome Is Real
Millions of people, from all walks of life are suffering from what is known as failed back surgery syndrome which is a real condition brought on by operations to fix other conditions of their spine. Before they settled for an operation, most people tried other cures first such as medications, adjustments and physical therapy. What happens is the patients find temporary relief or no relief at all and opt for an operation and that fails them as well.
Many people with back troubles have a variety of ailment that have contributed to their pain and suffering. FBSS could come from pressure on the nerve in the spine at a post-operative procedure, disc’s that herniated or things that keep coming back without being treated properly. These items could include joint mobility that has been altered during an operation, spinal de-conditioning of the muscle and scar tissue from the operation. People with spinal issues will find that they are more irritable and receive far less sleep then they should; they are more depressed due to the pain and all this could be some of the contributing factors to FBSS.
Some individuals may be predisposition to FBSS and their symptoms include diabetes, peripheral blood vessel or vassal disease and many of the autoimmune diseases. Some of the symptoms that could contribute to this phenomenon also known as post-laminectomy syndrome include, but are not limited to are dull and aching pain in the legs and back area, abnormal sensitivity and stabbing pain in the limbs.
Treatment options are limited for sufferers of FBSS patients, but there are some. A few doctors may want to perform another operation, but that is not always the answer, although some may not want to rule this out. There are medications such as anti-depressants, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs and mood stabilizers that will each help to manage pain in most people. Then there is the electric stimulator that works the nerve around the pain sight.
There are two groups of patients who have undergone one or more operations on their lower spine and continue to report problems. In one group, group A, these people were never indicated to have spinal operations but the pain was so severe, their doctors wanted to give them some type of relief, although it did not happen that way. In group B, these patients had somewhat incomplete surgeries in which the doctors did not find what they were looking for to make the operation a success so they stopped and therefore, did not take away the pain.
Many people are opting out of the operation for spine problems altogether and deciding to go for fusion procedures instead. A lumbar fusion procedure does exactly what it the title says it will do, fuse the discs together so there is no more pain. However, many people continue to experience failed back surgery with this process as well.
